Flynn: Son of Crimson Super Rare Physical Review – A Wonderful Indie Package

Flynn: Son of Crimson released in September of last year and very quickly found itself a decent following of fans who fell in love with Flynn and his trusty companion, Dex. The only thing that makes this wonderful 2D platforming game better is the fact that Super Rare Games has released a physical copy of it – and we were lucky enough to get our hands on one! (Thanks, Super Rare Games! <3)

Just to be clear, this is a review of the physical product itself, and we will also touch upon the positive aspects of the game. Lets get into it!

Oh, and if you want to see an unboxing of everything you get in this Super Rare Games package, check out our TikTok page here.

Flynn: Son of Crimson

Flynn: Son of Crimson is a handcrafted 2D action platforming game that sees players take the role of Flynn, along with his mythical companion and protector Dex, to set off on a journey to save Rosantica before The Scourge claims it for their own.

Without going into too much detail (we will save that for the review of the game itself), Flynn: Son of Crimson is a fantastic game that is very beautifully presented. The way in which Flynn and Dex work together in order to get through each level is wonderful, and what I really enjoyed is that there is a good difficulty balance on the game. It’s tough enough to pose a challenge and allow you to feel accomplished after defeating a boss, but not too tough that you will rage quit.

As for the Flynn: Son of Crimson Super Rare Games physical edition, is it worth the price? Absolutely, it is! Not only are you getting a one-of-a-kind physical release of an awesome indie title (which are limited to a specific number of copies), you are also getting a few cool extras with it which we will go into shortly. But, it’s worth me pointing out that the cover art (and inside cover art) is simply fantastic and does a good job of making it stand out from the rest of my collection.

All of Super Rare Games’ releases come packed with some extra items that you can’t get elsewhere. Upon first opening the eye-catching game case you will see a little art book where the ’instruction manual’ (if those were still a thing…) would go. This little art book contains a few pages of some stunning art from the game that is great to take a look through.

With every Super Rare Games order, you will also get a pack of SRG Trading Cards, related to the particular game you have ordered – in this case, Flynn: Son of Crimson cards were present.

You will get 3 randomly assorted cards out of a small selection available which adds greater value to the package itself and you can even get shines! I mean, who doesn’t like collecting trading cards?! When opened, I got Flynn himself, Zealock, and a full art card. Sadly, no shiny.

The final item that comes bundled in with all Super Rare Games’ is an exclusive SRG sticker that features artwork relating to the game itself. This one features an image of Flynn and Dex, and it’s a beautiful memento that I have decided cannot be stuck onto anything.

Overall, Super Rare Games provides a wonderful service for indie game lovers like myself and to the people that create them. For collectors, the package that SRG offers is a great one, even though I can already feel a hole burning in my pocket. Sadly for those interested, physical copies of Flynn: Son of Crimson have fully sold out with only 4,000 copies available when it launched, and these didn’t last longer than a day. If that doesn’t tell you that SRG products are highly sought after, I don’t know what will.

If you head over to Super Rare Games’ official website, you will find a few other indie games that you can add to your physical collection. Be quick, though, as these never last long. And if you are interested in what else Super Rare Games are up to, keep an eye on their Twitter page where they regularly announce what’s coming next.

I feel as though everyone should have at least one Super Rare Games physical in their collection. You can even check out Jason’s review of Super Rare Games’ release of Bloodroots for more thoughts of their packages!
