PowerA Joy-Con Charging Dock Review

As the Nintendo Switch continues to add more and more Joy-Con to their line up, the PowerA Joy-Con Charging Dock continues to look sweeter and sweeter. Well, PowerA was kind enough to send me one to review, and I could not be happier to receive this one. There are very few accessories that feel as necessary as something like this, and for those that have a lot of Joy-Con lying around, this may be the item you have long desired.

Let me tell you the reasons why the PowerA Joy-Con Charging Dock is an absolute necessity for Switch owners!

PowerA Joy-Con Charging Dock

The Nintendo Switch has been around for well over 4 years now, and it is still going strong, especially with the release of the recent OLED model. With that in mind, avid Nintendo fans may have a few extra Joy-Con lying around, and the fact that there are over 30 unique Joy-Con, including some beautiful special edition ones recently released for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD, I would imagine there are people like me that end up with a lot of dead Joy-Cons.

Well, the PowerA Joy-Con Charging Dock is a wonderful little device that can charge four different Joy-Con at the same time, and it can be a huge help if you regularly have party nights where gaming on the Switch is involved. This dock will always make sure you have at least 6 Joy-Con charged at any given time (4 on the Charging Dock and 2 on the Switch itself), and that is a huge relief considering there are no simple, alternative ways to charge these little controllers. The Joy-Con are said to have a 20-hour battery life, but if they are left unattended for so long, that battery does drain. Leaving them docked in the charging station eliminates that problem completely.

The Charging Dock is a great build, too. It is very sturdy and houses the up-to-4 Joy-Con perfectly. The only minor gripe is that it can only charge two left Joy-Con and two right Joy-Con at a time, so it is impossible to charge more than two of any one side. I know that sounds like a small complaint, but I am aware that some people have an abundance of left Joy-Con because they are more comfortable to play with than right ones. Despite, the charging works great, and it does look at home with the Switch console.

The LED lights at the top indicate the charge of each Joy-Con, and conveniently each Joy-Con has their own LED to make it even easier to know which ones are fully charged and which ones need a little more time.

The charging wire, which is a USB without a wall charger block, wraps up nicely under the Charging Dock. The wire is not very long, but it should be enough to reach an outlet and still be presented well. It is a minor annoyance that you will need a wall charger block to charge this, but you can alternatively charge it through the Nintendo Switch dock’s USB ports, which does make it quite easy to connect near the console.

When all is said and done, this is a product that just does its job and does it really well. It provides a great look, packs up really well, and charges four Joy-Con at the same time. What more can you ask for? If you have a lot of Joy-Con and very little means of charging them, then this is an absolute must-buy.
