In a bit of surprising news today, Epic Games has officially acquired Mediatonic, the development team behind the successful platformer battle royale Fall Guys: Ultimate Knockout.
This acquisition would be devastating if it meant that the Switch development was put on hold. Thankfully, though, the recently-announced Switch version will not be affected, and Mediatonic says it still intends to bring the title to Nintendo’s hybrid console.
Here’s a quote from Mediatonic about the decision to team with Epic:
We’ve been mutual fans for a while and as we’ve gotten to know the Epic team better, it turns out we have a lot in common and share a lot of the same goals.
They really love Fall Guys and our team at Mediatonic. We’ll continue to be the same team, working on the same game, but we’ll now have the full power of Epic Games to help us take the game to new (dizzying) heights.https://www.mediatonicgames.com/blog/mediatonic-joins-the-epic-games-family
When Fall Guys originally released on PS4 and then PC, Devolver Digital was the publisher, and it looked as though the relationship between Devolver and Mediatonic was solid. However, after this acquisition, the relationship is no longer in place, which leaves Devolver out of the equation. Despite that, Devolver wished them well and was clearly proud of them and their relationship.
There is a lot to unravel here, but the good news is that we are still getting Fall Guys on the Switch and shouldn’t worry too much about this partnership. For more on this acquisition, please read Mediatonic’s official statement.
