Among Us – Nindie Spotlight – The Resurrection
Howdy, all! Welcome to this week’s Nindie Spotlight. We apologize for not releasing on last week, but we will make up for it. Today, we are talking about a game that has had its ups and downs, but is now one of the most popular games around. I’m Chelly, and this is your Nindie Spotlight of the week – Among Us.
Among Us
Now, if you haven’t heard of Among Us until now, firstly, where have you been? And secondly, sit down. Get comfy. Let me tell you about it.
Unknown to most people, Among Us actually released back in 2018 on IOS, Android, and then soon after, PC. It actually also featured cross-play between all these platforms. Sadly, it didn’t gain much attention at all with only roughly 30-50 concurrent players. Innersloth was close to abandoning the project many times, but decided they would continue working on the game for its small player base.
Luckily the team didn’t give up, because fast forward to 2020 and the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, Among Us started to gain some traction. Due to the worldwide lockdown, many people were sat at home bored, struggling for things to do or play. A few well-known streamers on Twitch got hold of Among Us and decided to stream it. This caused it to become more and more popular with the game rising to 1.5 MILLION concurrent players in September 2020. How crazy is that?
Given its newfound popularity, Innersloth announced that Among Us 2 was now in development whilst they contained releasing updates for the original, adding more servers, more regions, and increasing the player base. Shortly after the announcement, Innersloth reported that they would be cancelling the sequel, and instead would be implementing all changes to Among Us. In December 2020, the game released on Nintendo Switch.
So, what do you do in Among Us? Well, the main premise is this: 4-10 players are on a space ship (yay space!) with 1 (or more) of those players being the imposter. Obviously, only the imposter knows who they are, and so the others have to guess via process of elimination or seeing a murder first-hand.
The imposter’s purpose is to fool the players into thinking they aren’t in fact the imposter and also kill all the crewmates. The crewmates can perform various tasks which would prove them to not be the imposter. If a crewmate thinks they know who the imposter is or have seen something suspicious, then they can call a team meeting.
When a team meeting is called, this is all the players’ chance to vote on who they think is the imposter and talk to the crew members to discuss what they have seen. Of course, this is also the imposter’s time to convince the others they aren’t guilty or to put the blame onto somebody else. The crewmember with the most votes is quite literally ejected from the ship. It’s a simple premise, but boy is it fun.
Is it Worth Getting?
The simple answer is, absolutely. Among Us is priced at just £3.89 and that’s a small price to pay for such an addicting game with no end of gameplay. The Nintendo Switch version is a little behind where the Steam version of the game is (no surprise there), but this is a game that will be hilarious, frustrating, and a great way to interact with friends looking for something to pass the time.
It’s an easy game to learn and master that is perfect for casual gamers and veterans alike. Obviously, communication on the Nintendo Switch always has been and continues to be an issue – and it’s no different here. If you’re playing with friends, you’re probably best making a Discord server to do this. But other than that, it’s a fantastic and fun game.
Buy it and enjoy it, especially since it is getting a new major update on March 31st that adds a huge, new map and more skins!
