Coffee Talk – Nindie Spotlight

coffee talk

Good day, everyone. Welcome to another Nindie Spotlight, where we talk about our favorite Nindies and why you should play them. I’m Chelly, and this is your Nindie Spotlight for this week – Coffee Talk.

Coffee Talk

If there is one thing on this Earth that I could not live without, it’s coffee. I can not function without my morning coffee, and I drink so much that I’m now pretty sure my veins are filled with coffee and not blood. So when I heard of Coffee Talk, I was instantly interested without seeing anything about it.

Coffee Talk is a heavily narrative game about talking to people and hearing about their lives. You are a coffee shop owner in an alternate Seattle. You live among elves, orcs, mermaids, as well as a lot of other fantasy creatures. And you serve them coffee. But the reason why yours is the best coffee shop in town? You only open at night. Cool, right? I would totally go to a night-time coffee shop.

So with the majority of visual novels, you will likely spend most of your time talking to people, making narrative choices, and listening to a story, but with Coffee Talk, you will also be serving up the hot cocoa (This isn’t just about coffee, y‘know).

Don’t think that this is just a ‘the-character-asks-for-a-drink-and-you-select-it-from-a-list’-type of game. Oh, no. You have to mix the ingredients yourself. Only when you have made a drink from the ingredients you have does the game save that. Sometimes characters will come in and ask for a drink that you will have never heard of, and you have to just kind of guess. The way you make their drinks alters the narrative which I found amazing.

One thing that really struck me with Coffee Talk is how it fits real-world problems into a fantasy setting. The game touches upon safe sex, racism, pride, anxiety, and many more issues – it was really nice to see that this could also be an educational game.

Graphics & Sound

As if Coffee Talk wasn’t perfect enough, its art style and soundtrack are some of the best I’ve seen for an indie game yet. It has a 90’s anime-inspired pixel art style that is simply stunning. Animated coffee has never looked so appealing.

The soundtrack provides a chilled vibe throughout. It has a series of jazzy, lo-fi music that you are able to actually create your own playlist for the shop with a selection of songs.

Coffee Talk has so much going for it, and I connected with it so deeply. I absolutely adore this game. It’s relaxing and emotional, the perfect combination. If you’re interested in testing it out, you can download a demo on the eShop right now! Do itttttt.

And that’s all, folks! There is your Nindie Spotlight on Coffee Talk. Join me next time for another brief look into the Nintendo Switch’s best Nindie titles. What are some of your favorite indie games? Let us know in the comments below! Thank you for visiting Nintendo Link, and I’ll see you all again soon!
