Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII is the New Smash Bros Character
Earlier today, Nintendo teased that they would be revealing the new Super Smash Bros Ultimate character at The Game Awards 2020, and I think the reveal was something outside everyone’s predictions. The new character is none other than the villain of Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth.
This is a great new addition, albeit another sword user. Of all the Final Fantasy characters, Sephiroth is one of the most recognizable, and he looks to be a great addition to the Super Smash Bros Ultimate roster.
Joining his co-Final Fantasy VII star, Cloud, Sephiroth rounds up a powerful good-versus-evil dynamic within the Smash Bros universe that is mostly absent, especially among characters that are not originally from Nintendo. I know the story elements are not there, but being able to have battles within the game where Cloud and Mario can face off against Sephiroth and Bowser is a fun video game cross-over that I did not know I needed.
In character fashion, Sephiroth uses his sword in tremendous ways here in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. From the trailer alone, we can see him stabbing the sides of stages to prevent falling and he can seemingly slice platforms in half. They even teased some other fun stuff in the trailer when he and Cloud clash, and it looks like there may be some more details for us to learn about this character and the dynamics he will bring to the table.
More details will surely come soon from Sakurai and Nintendo, but we are aware that the character will launch some time this month. Look forward to playing as the One-Winged Angel some time around Christmas.
EDIT: On December 17th, Sakurai will hold his famous Mr Sakurai Presents to focus on Sephiroth. Here are the time tables for those interested in watching the presentation:
- 2 PM PT
- 5 PM ET
- 10 PM in the UK
- 11 PM in Europe
- 7 AM (Dec 18) in Japan
