The Best Pro Wrestling Representation on the Nintendo Switch
When it comes to pro wrestling as a video game genre, the Nintendo Switch is not normally a console that initially comes to mind, especially since the WWE has seemingly given up on the hybrid platform. However, that doesn’t mean the Switch is absent of some fun pro wrestling titles, including a major upcoming release.
With that said, here are some solid pro wrestling titles to enjoy on your Nintendo Switch!
RetroMania Wrestling
RetroMania Wrestling is an absolutely stellar indie pro wrestling game! There is so much to love about this one, from the customizations to the story mode, as well as all the indie darlings, like Warhorse, Jeff Cobb, and Colt Cabana that make their pro wrestling debuts in a video game, and there are even some legends like Hawk & Animal of the Road Warriors, Austin Idol, and Nikita Koloff. This is a solid star-powered roster unlike any other, which makes this title extra special.
This may not be the most accessible wrestling game, but it has a whole lot going on at a very affordable price. Honestly, this may be my current favorite wrestling game on the Switch, and it is the only one that I regularly play now thanks to the fantastic little roster and tons of love put into it by the dev team.
Wrestling Empire
Wrestling Empire is a throwback to the N64 era of pro wrestling, and you know what? It works quite well. Sure, it lacks in star power and fun entrances, but there is a lot to love here. The customization options are pretty grand, and in theory, you can create quite the elaborate roster, albeit not official.
So if you are looking for a budget wrestling game on Switch that reminds you of those old No Mercy days, this is a solid choice. It does not have any licenses or actual wrestlers on its roster, but Wrestling Empire is still an amazing option for pro wrestling goodness on the Switch.
WWE 2K Battlegrounds
Originally, WWE 2K18 was the only WWE representation on the Nintendo Switch, and it is still listed as one of the biggest file sizes on the console. However, there is one more WWE game, and it comes in the form of WWE 2K Battlegrounds. Honestly, this is not the greatest pro wrestling game, even if it has WWE in its title. It’s sloppy, looks weird, and uses a paywall to lock out certain superstars.
It is technically the same price as RetroMania Wrestling and is an official WWE licensed title, which means you will see big-name superstars, but you are better off spending your money elsewhere. I would only pick this up if you are a die-hard WWE fan.
Chiki-Chiki Boxy Pro Wrestling
Chiki-Chiki Boxy Pro Wrestling is a bizarre yet wildly entertaining arcade-style wrestling game. Similar to other indie games on this list, this does not have any official licenses so it depends heavily on its quirky design and easy-to-use controls. It’s price is also a much easier pill to swallow than others on this list, so that is a huge plus.
If you are looking to try a newer pro wrestling game but do not want to throw down lots of money, this is definitely a solid little outing that will entertain well. Sure, it may not be the most complex on this list, but it sure is a fun one to play with friends locally.
Big Bang Pro Wrestling
Big Bang Pro Wrestling is an old SNK handheld wrestling game that was originally Japan-only, but it is now available in the west and on the Nintendo Switch! This incredibly affordable title is as old-school as you can get, but it is genuinely a solid wrestling game and is definitely something to add to any fan of the medium’s library of wrestling titles.
There is not a whole lot to this one, as it is quite the dated title. This is more for people interested in something that was originally only released in Japan, and its cheap price is definitely something that will excite anyone.
Pro Wrestling (NES)
Pro Wrestling is one of those amazing NES titles that still makes its rounds on the internet thanks to “A WINNER IS YOU” projected on screen after a valiant win. This title is still a riot to play, and thanks to the Nintendo Switch Online’s service, this comes within the NES application.
This is simply a classic. It does not have all of the bells and whistles that most of these more modern titles have, but it has charm and is one of those old video games that has a special place in many gamers’ hearts.
Action Arcade Wrestling
Action Arcade Wrestling is something more than your standard pro wrestling game. This one is filled with special abilities, obnoxious taunting, and absolutely bonkers customization options. This one also takes a lot of notes from the N64-era of wrestling games, but it definitely adds its own twists thanks to the flair and pageantry of this colorful and often-times hilarious outing.
If you are a fan of over-the-top pro wrestling games that look more modern but control like the classics, then Action Arcade Wrestling may be just for you.
AEW Fight Forever
Finally, we have AEW Fight Forever, the recently announced and shown off major upcoming release from Yukes (The people behind the old N64 wrestling games) and AEW Games. This is the first title to be released from the young pro wrestling company started by Tony Khan, Kenny Omega, The Young Bucks, and Cody Rhodes, and it looks like it is going to be a lot of fun.
Kenny Omega has been helping with this behind the scenes, and as a huge gamer himself and a lover of wrestling games, it is encouraging to know there is a proper wrestler and gamer making sure that AEW Fight Forever is going to be a pro wrestling game worthy of our time and money. Fingers crossed that this one releases by the end of the year and makes us all happy!
