What is Dinkum, and Why is it Perfect for the Nintendo Switch?

We all love a good sandbox farming/life sim, and the Nintendo Switch has many offerings to keep players entertained, with Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing New Horizons taking the top spots.

Well, I’m here to tell you about a shiny new farming sim that would be perfect for the Nintendo Switch that is currently only available on PC. Let me tell you about Dinkum – yes, that’s its actual name.

dinkum

Dinkum is a new sandbox farming sim game recently released onto Steam in Early Access, and it’s what I call a lovely mix between Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing set in Australia. I think it blows the latter title out of the water, and here’s why.

It’s obvious to see where Dinkum has gotten its inspiration from, and it seems to take all the best parts from Animal Crossing and expand on them in nearly every way possible. Dinkum sees you exploring the Australian outback, farming, fishing, mining, bug catching, tree cutting, town building, and making friends, all whilst avoiding the many dangers of Australia. Yes, crocodiles are roaming around, sharks are hunting the seas, and various other creatures inhabit that I can’t even begin to explain. I mean, is there really a fire-breathing bear-like creature in Australia? I don’t think I want to find out!

The point is, you can spend countless hours (as I already have) finding things to do in Dinkum, and creating and expanding your town is a treat. Everything you do requires a separate licence, and as you grow and level up your stats, new licences will become available to you, unlocking more things to craft, build and, well, do. Want to fly around in a helicopter needlessly? You can. Want to go underground mining for rubies that you can sell for ridiculous amounts of money? You can. Do you want to capture a doggo and have it follow you wherever you go? You can. The possibilities are seemingly endless in Dinkum.

Dinkum vs. Animal Crossing New Horizons

So, “How does it triumph over Animal Crossing New Horizons“, I hear you say? I know that Animal Crossing has a cult following, and people will favour it because it’s so much more known, but if you play Dinkum for just a day, you will see it has so much more to offer. Animal Crossing has a lot of restrictions on what you can do, which Dinkum eliminates. Dinkum doesn’t run in real-time as Animal Crossing does; no more waiting a day to construct a building in real-time. As someone who works full-time, I don’t want to be waiting days to progress in a game I’m enjoying.

The numerous crafting options Dinkum offers allow players to create their town not just by choosing where houses are placed but by building fences, statutes, gates, pathways, animal farms – you name it—making it feel like your creation. I sincerely think this is lacking in Animal Crossing because as much as it offers a little freedom, it doesn’t offer much.

Dinkum features a much larger map to explore and focuses more on surviving and hunting than just generally plodding around with no worry, as Animal Crossing New Horizons sees you doing. Dinkum gives you a purpose, characters will often give you various quests to complete, and you always have something to work towards – another thing I feel Animal Crossing lacks.

On top of these things, Dinkum features a drop-in/drop-out online co-op mode that is superior to Animal Crossing in every imaginable way. It’s so easy to do, requiring no invite whatsoever. Players that join you will also be able to contribute in every way possible, not feeling like they’re just there for a guided tour of your town. They can complete missions, kill enemies, pay off town debts for you, sell objects, craft, and place items. It’s all possible, and it makes for a great adventure.

Why is Dinkum Perfect for the Nintendo Switch?

I think Dinkum would be a great game for Nintendo Switch consoles as it’s the perfect relaxing game. I would love to dive into bed after a long day and wind down whilst playing Dinkum under the covers. Sadly, that isn’t possible right now.

The Nintendo Switch has developed a vast ‘cozy gaming’ following, and having Dinkum on the console would allow a much greater fanbase for the title. It’s already a title loved by many and has received the ‘overwhelmingly positive’ review status on Steam. Just imagine the number of players it would gain from being on one of the most popular consoles in the world at the moment.

The sandbox farming sim already has full controller support and isn’t entirely a demanding game, so it should be an easy port over to the Nintendo Switch. As the game is still in its early access stage, it has a long way to go before this is possible, but let’s hope it is in the pipeline, as it would be a shame to miss out on this one. It feels like it was made for the Switch, so let’s make it happen, James Bendon.
