The next entry in the popular fantasy farming franchise Rune Factory 5 is finally out, and relationships are a key factor within the title to the point you can marry NPCs. But can you carry out Rune Factory 5 same sex marriages? Find out below.

The XSEED Games localization team has added same-sex relationships and marriages within Rune Factory 5 for Western regions.

“This was something we had argued to be included for many years, and we’re so grateful to everyone who helped make it a reality,” said XSEED in a blog post. “Most of all, we’re thankful to the many patient fans for asking for its inclusion in social media comments and emails over the years.”

Every eligible bachelor and bachelorette can be paired up with your character, no matter their gender.

This was no easy task for XSEED Games as both the developer and publisher had to change up multiple aspects of the game to realize this dream. The script was altered to include gender-neutral terms.

“We also included gender-neutral versions in case we needed a single voice line that would work for both possibilities since we didn’t yet know how the same-sex relationship lines would appear in the game if the feature was implemented,” said XSEED. “This meant we had our bases covered in case we couldn’t have same- and opposite-sex voices.” The publisher put in both versions of the text.

As same-sex couples can’t have children of their own, new scenes were also added where the wed pair would receive children rather than having the woman get into pregnancy. New cutscenes have also been added with same-sex couples making their vows.

It’s refreshing to see Rune Factory 5 same sex marriages being represented in the games industry. Perhaps this will encourage more games to include LGBTQ+ representation. It’s also one of the Nintendo Switch’s highlight games this month.
