Awesome Games Done Quick – Speeding Through Your Childhood

Every year, we get two main speedrunning events: the early year AGDQ (Awesome Games Done Quick) and the summer SGDQ (Summer Games Done Quick). For the last few years, the events have been online, so they can keep going amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. This has been a really good turn for GDQ as it has allowed runners who couldn’t normally go to the event to be able to participate, and we have seen such growth out of the event because of this. Last year alone, AGDQ raised $2.76 million for Doctors Without Borders.

The main pull for the event is watching these incredibly talented people just absolutely destroy games from your childhood and even newer titles, and this year’s event has kept that premise going. As of this writing, Awesome Games Done Quick 2022 has raised $1.6 million and already had some absolutely killer runs.

While the event itself is live for just 2 more days, GDQ has been great about uploading runs to their YouTube channel only a few hours after the runs occur. Some of the killer runs that have already happened this year that you should check out are:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D by gymnast86 in just 38:50 was a great run, and personally thinking about being able to beat a Zelda game in under 39 minutes is wild. The VOD for that is available here if you are interested in watching someone just absolutely destroy Majora’s Mask.
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past run by speedrunner hotarubi_ta beating all bosses on the SNES in an estimated time of 58 minutes! That run is taking place on Saturday, January 15th at 3:51pm EST.
  • octopuscal’s any% run of Earthbound on Saturday, January 15th at 11:54am is estimated at 1 hour long. Any% is the wild west of speed runs meaning they can use any glitches or skips they want. It’s always a spectacle to see these games broken in ways we have never seen before.

The races are always so much fun to watch, and the one that has Mr. Cloud Kirby, HardcoreGaming, Jhay, and Tibs all facing off in a race to beat Super Mario Galaxy as Luigi estimated at around 2 hours and 35 minutes again in the any%, so we will get to see this game truly broken.

These Games Done Quick events are a fantastic way to see how the gaming community can come together to raise just an astonishing amount of money for a good cause, and we get to have fun and watch some fantastic speedrunners show off their skills in the process. Along with donations, there are hundreds of prizes for donating all week long, along with bonus speed runs unlocked after certain milestones are met. It’s a fun week ahead, for sure, and they go non-stop from Sunday, January 9th at 11:30 am Eastern to Sunday, January 16th at 12:08 am eastern.

If you do miss the event, they post each run on their YouTube soon after! The best part of the event is that there is something for everyone, and seeing these talented runners everytime they hold a GDQ makes me want to try and learn how to speedrun. To see some amazing runs, be sure to check out AGDQ! It is live for a couple more days, and today has some big ones!
