NEO: The World Ends With You Producer Says There Are No Plans for a New Entry
Following Square Enix’s announcement that NEO: The World Ends With You “underperformed” in regards to sales, many fans began to wonder where the franchise may go next. Well, it doesn’t look so bright at the moment. In an interview with PC Invasion, NEO: The World Ends With You Producer Tomohiko Hirano and Director Tatsuya Kando both commented that there were no current plans for another installment of the RPG series.
Hirano did encourage fans to continue their support so that Square Enix would one day consider another sequel:
To be candid, we don’t have any current plans for the next installment. However, there are still many areas in the city of Shibuya that we haven’t been able to recreate in either title, so a part of me wants to realize that in some shape or form. Please continue to share your passion and love for the game — perhaps then our company will have us make a sequel.

Kando continued:
I feel like I’ve done what I can for the time being — NEO turned out to be a game that I packed with fourteen years’ worth of thought and emotion, so I feel like I’ve given it my all. I’ll continue to take a look at fan feedback to see how they perceived the game, and from there see what the best path forward might be.

This is really unfortunate news to read, considering the amount of effort and dedication that went into this sequel. It appeared that many Switch players were excited about the prospect of another The World Ends With You coming to the hybrid console, but once everything settled, it looks like the interest in NEO was merely in words and writing and not in actual sales.
