Slime Rancher: Plortable Edition – Nindie Spotlight – A Game of Adorable Admin

When I first heard that Slime Rancher: Plortable Edition was coming to the Nintendo Switch at the August 2021 Indie Showcase, I was incredibly excited. I’d been looking at this game on Steam for a while, and the fact that it was getting a Switch release the same day of the showcase was just incredible! After a little bit of internal debate due to the cost of the game, I finally bought it, and I’m so glad I did. Slime Rancher is a joy to experience!

I am The Never Yak, and this is your Nindie Spotlight for today: Slime Rancher: Plortable Edition!

Slime Rancher: Plortable Edition

In Slime Rancher, you play as Beatrix LeBeau, a human who has recently moved to a planet called the Far, Far Range to pursue her career in slime ranching. So, how does one go about slime ranching?

Well, let’s start with the basics.

On the Far, Far Range you can find an incredible cast of unique and colourful slimes. Pink slimes are the easiest to find, and as you explore the planet you will discover more and more different types. Phosphor slimes flap around at night, hunter slimes scavenge the world for prey, and adorable quantum slimes glitch in and out of existence. My personal favourite slime is the Puddle slime, because they’re very cute.

When you find a slime, you can suck it up into your vacpack and store it for later. On your ranch, there are multiple spaces to keep these slimes. The spaces can be used for other things too, such as storage units, incinerators for unwanted items, and even farms to grow food. Each slime has it’s own dietary requirements; they’ll either eat meat, fruit or vegetables. When you feed a slime the kind of food it likes, it will produce a plort.

Now, plorts are everything in Slime Rancher. When you take a plort up to the plort exchanger found on your ranch, you will be given some of the game’s currency, Newbucks. The harder the plort is to find, the more Newbucks you’ll get for it. These Newbucks can be used for upgrades to your vacpack, changes to your ranch, and even access to new areas. So that’s how Slime Rancher works, a game of adorable admin.

Definitely a lot of information, I know, but the game lets you learn it with simple tutorials and easy controls, so it never feels overwhelming. Okay, now onto more reasons Slime Rancher is so excellent.

A Great Big World

When you’re not busy maintaining your ranch, the Far, Far Range has a lot of space to explore. The areas you start off with are small, but overtime you will gain access to a gigantic array of colourful biomes to enjoy. By finding slime keys or using your jet pack, you can steadily gain access to new places, new foods, and new slimes.

Throughout your journey, you’ll receive emails and find journal entries from friends and fellow ranchers on the Far, Far Range. Each detail will allow you to learn a little bit more about the slimes and what’s happening on the Far, Far Range. Although these messages are cryptic, there’s still information to be found.

There’s also a fantastic Slimeapedia that can be accessed back at the ranch. It provides great insight to the flora and fauna of the worlds, and is great fun to read.

It’s so Cute!

I think that just from seeing the pictures in this article, we can all agree that Slime Rancher is simply adorable. It’s round, squishy art style, vibrant colours, cheery music, and sound effects all radiate adorableness. Even the Switch, Slime Rancher: Plortable Edition, is just great.

Slime Rancher is probably my absolute favourite casual game. I love that even though it’s simple and relaxing to play, there’s still a story and complex layers hidden beneath the cuteness. It’s an absolute highlight of my day when I can sit down for a bit, relax, and immerse myself in the incredible world of Slime Rancher.
