The Original Shantae Coming to Switch April 22
In a wonderful surprise today, WayForward announced that the original Shantae game that released on the GameBoy Color in 2002 will be releasing on the Nintendo Switch digitally on April 22nd, 2021. We learned that the team was planning to bring the title to the Switch back in the summer of 2020, but we finally have a release date!
Fans of the series’ recent outings may not have ever had a chance to play the first, so this is a pleasant announcement that brings a fantastic classic to the Switch eShop.
Check out the release date trailer:
What is Shantae?
The original Shantae is back and coming to the Nintendo Switch eShop on April 22! Initially launched in 2002, Shantae is the acclaimed action-adventure-platformer that is often considered one of the most impressive Game Boy Color games ever produced. In this pixel-perfect adaptation, Shantae hair-whips, dances, and transforms as she seeks out four elemental stones throughout Sequin Land to put a stop to the nefarious lady pirate, Risky Boots!
Limited Run Release
On top of the initial announcement from summer last year, we also learned that Limited Run Games will be producing a physical copy of the original game as well. Unfortunately, we still have not received word on pre-orders or release dates, but considering we finally got the digital date, I imagine the physical one will be around the corner.
Stay tuned for more updates regarding the Limited Run physical release.
