Switch Firmware 12.0.0 is Live, Includes Code to Update Dock

Earlier today, Nintendo released the Switch firmware 12.0.0 update to a bit of confusion. Such a rounded update usually includes some major change or upgrades, but Switch owners will notice that not a whole lot happens after updating to the new firmware.

However, dataminers have already found some significant information that point to new things that are leaving many of us scratching our heads.

As relayed by Twitter user OatmealDome, version 12.0.0 apparently allows for the dock’s internal firmware to be updated.

It is an interesting addition, as there is not much to the dock. As OatmealDome pointed out, it only has USB chips, a MyDP to HDMI converter, and flash memory to store its firmware. They also do not believe that Nintendo has ever issued an update for the dock in the past, and there may not be much of a purpose in doing so given its limited technology.

OatmealDome and Twitter user hexkyz also pointed out a setting called “is_crda_fw_update_supported”. There’s some talk that “crda” essentially refers to “Cradle Aula”. Cradle could simply refer to the dock, and Aula could simply be a codename for a new Switch dock model or console.

Nintendo has not commented on any of this, so outside of the official patch notes, the rest is left up for interpretation. With E3 around the corner and Nintendo confirmed to participate, color me intrigued, because this could be the precursor for an upgraded Switch model. But again, there have been no official announcements yet, so we will continue to wait until Nintendo explains this Switch firmware 12.0.0 update in more detail.
