Enter the Gungeon – Nindie Spotlight

enter the gungeon

Good day, everyone. I’m back! It’s been a crazy couple of weeks but nonetheless welcome to another Nindie Spotlight, where we talk about our favorite Nindies and why you should play them. I’m Chelly, and this is your Nindie Spotlight for this week – Enter the Gungeon.

Enter the Gungeon

Okay, I know that Enter the Gungeon has been available for a few years now, but surprisingly enough, a lot of people I speak to don’t have a clue what it is and with the sequel, Exit the Gungeon, having released last year, why not make the first my Nindie game of the week?

Enter the Gungeon is a manic dungeon-crawler that follows a band of misfits seeking some looting and shooting goodness – among many things. They all have the same goal: seek the gun that can kill the past. Whatever that means.

The Gungeon itself is an ever-changing, ever-evolving environment filled with enemies, loot, and hidden secrets. Plenty to explore – and no playthrough is the same. It’s a procedurally-generated labyrinth, and it’s brilliant. Spoiler Alert: expect to die A LOT.

Players can choose to run the Gungeon with one of several different characters, each with their own abilities and stats. Mix and match to see which one works best for you.

Let me tell you, though, the gameplay is hectic! Bullets flying everywhere, enemies everywhere, you rolling everywhere. It’s great fun, and there is a lot of guns to find. Each gun is completely different from the last: some may fire as normal, some may fire a series of bullets in a circle – everything is different.

The same can be said about the game’s enemies and bosses: they all have their own move-sets and unique appearance, and they look great. What’s more is that each item, gun, enemy, and boss has its own story. It’s so unique and so much detail has gone into that aspect.

Graphics and Sound

Enter the Gungeon sports an art-style that I, personally, am a massive fan of. This cutesy, pixelated, everything-has-a-face goodness is just lovely. Each level has been hand-designed and just looks stunning – packed full of detail. The game has a very dark vibe to it with the odd burst of color, which suits it well.

The soundtrack is of epic proportions. I can only describe it as techno-pop, and it makes me want to dance while I’m playing. I don’t advise this as you will die, but seriously, the soundtrack is awesome.

Enter the Gungeon is simply a game that has to be experienced. It will last you hours and hours and will provide you with a little bit of a challenge. If you have already played it, check out last year’s Exit the Gungeon. You’ll thank me later.
