On September 1st, the Joe Biden campaign took a unique route by taking their campaign strategy a whole different direction in order to reach a broader audience. In short, Joe Biden campaigns within Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
In a very cute way, the campaign team decided to go the abstract approach by providing QR codes that players can scan for free that will add various Biden/Harris 2020 designs that you can use on your clothes, signs, or within your house.
The in-game events and consistent updating in Animal Crossing: New Horizons has continually made the game a mainstay for fans and gamers alike, especially during this global pandemic in 2020.
This is not the first time people have used videos games to advertise, campaign, or perform for an audience. In April of this year, over 10 million people attended Travis Scott’s Astronomical concert within Fortnite, and it was a huge success for the star and the video game. Maybe the various Biden campaigns, including this Animal Crossing one, will have equal success. Only time will tell.
“Animal Crossing is a dynamic, diverse, and powerful platform that brings communities together from across the world. It is an exciting new opportunity for our campaign to engage and connect Biden-Harris supporters as they build and decorate their islands,” Christian Tom, director of digital partnerships for the Biden campaign, said in a statement to The Verge. “As we enter the final campaign stretch towards November, this is one way we are finding new creative and innovative ways to meet voters where they are and bring our supporters together.”
An interesting approach, but as things become more and more digital, this is the expectation as technology improves. The DNC was held entirely online this year, and it was met with widely positive reception. Either way, the Biden campaign made a bold move with this Animal Crossing approach, and it has a lot of people talking.
